How I Kicked The Habit

The Nicodemon

June 16th, 2009  |  Published in How I Kicked The Habit

Who or what is the Nicodemon? The Nicodemon is used by some people to describe how addiction makes you think in strange ways. He, she or it actually fool you into defying your own powers of logic and reason and to believe and support your addiction.

Now, personally speaking, I am not religious and nor do I believe in evil spirits or beings that we cannot see. The Nicodemon is just a personification of this strange phenomenon that we cannot explain. If you are a person of faith, then you may believe the Nicodemon to be evil personified or otherwise - this is not a problem at all and may actually help.

Stop Being Blind and See Cigarettes For What They Really Are

Some people are just blind to the dangers of cigarettes. You probably aren’t but it is still worth examining the bad side effects from smoking. This is not for negative reasons of fear. You probably already know of some of the bad effects and these may get you stressed or worried.

Remember When You Were A Non-Smoker?

June 16th, 2009  |  Published in How I Kicked The Habit

I’ve said many times that when you stop smoking that you will be a non-smoker again, not an ex-smoker.

You will feel just like you did when you were younger and healthier and were not yet addicted to cigarettes. Can you remember what that was like?

June 16th, 2009  |  Published in How I Kicked The Habit

Maybe you’ve heard of hypnotherapy as a successful method of stopping smoking. I am also an advocate of hypnotherapy when it is used properly.

But I also see hypnotists all the time using the wrong methods. Let’s see what mistakes they make so that you won’t make them yourself.

What If Your Partner Smokes?

June 16th, 2009  |  Published in How I Kicked The Habit

What do you do if your partner smokes? Let me allay any fears that you may have.

Bad Advice Such As “willpower is key”

June 16th, 2009  |  Published in How I Kicked The Habit

Looking around the stopping smoking forums, I am just amazed by the amount of bad advice that is freely given to people wanting to quit (actually, I’m not really that amazed!)

I once heard someone say “willpower is key”! I nearly spat my food out onto my screen when I first read that! It could not be further from the truth.

The Myth Of Willpower

June 16th, 2009  |  Published in How I Kicked The Habit

Willpower. I almost regard “willpower” as a dirty word when it comes to stopping smoking. It is the most widely used method to stop smoking and yet is also the least successful.

So what do we mean by willpower? It’s when you use nothing except your will in a battle against your addictive urges to smoke cigarettes. It’s never a clean fight, it’s always messy, and usually the addiction wins.

Barely 1 or 2% of smokers will quit successfully using willpower alone. And even those lucky few (and that is what they are - just lucky and not better than anyone else) will open themselves up to the danger of starting smoking again at some point in the future.

The Time Of Your Life

June 16th, 2009  |  Published in How I Kicked The Habit

I’m sure you’ve heard the different figures given for how much of your life smoking takes away. 11 minutes per cigarette? 14 minutes per cigarette?

I’m not going to patronise you and force yet another bad statistic down your throat. Let’s look at it in a different way.

Breathe More Easily

Smoking directly affects the circulatory system. The smoke goes into our lungs and chemicals are exchanged directly into the bloodstream. The noxious cocktail of hazardous substances has a bad effect on the arteries, veins, capillaries and organs of your body.

No More Mr. Stinky

June 15th, 2009  |  Published in How I Kicked The Habit

It’s well known that smokers stink. I never used to understand what people meant by “stinky smokers”. I grew up in a household where both parents smoked (and myself and my brother would go on to become smokers ourselves) and I never understood when people said that smokers stink.

Then I started smoking myself and whilst I was at college, I would have a quick smoke before lectures and then hook up with a buddy. “Dude, you stink!” - he would say.
