Even Some Hypnotists Are Fooled By Willpower

Maybe you’ve heard of hypnotherapy as a successful method of stopping smoking. I am also an advocate of hypnotherapy when it is used properly.

But I also see hypnotists all the time using the wrong methods. Let’s see what mistakes they make so that you won’t make them yourself.

You see, a hypnotist will read to you and give you a new way of thinking and looking at your addiction, giving you almost a different state of mind. But if you don’t understand and agree with what is being said then eventually the effect will wear out.

Let’s say that I hypnotise you into thinking that you have a great singing voice. You might go away after a few sessions and really believe that you are the next Pavarotti! But eventually, you will figure out that really you can’t sing at all (apologies if you really can!). Even though the hypnotist convinced you that you had a great voice, reality eventually sank in because he was wrong.

This is what some hypnotists do. They tell you that you will no longer crave cigarettes and it works for a few days. But eventually, your addiction catches up with you and your years of smoking addiction win the battle in your brain against what the hypnotist told you. After all, the hypnotist told you something that just flies in the face of your years of experience, right?

These hypnotists who believe in willpower are con artists in my opinion. I don’t care how many accreditations and memberships they have. They don’t truly understand addiction and they’re just out to make a quick buck whether they know it or not. If they followed up with their clients and saw the low success rates then maybe they would try to understand addiction and change their hypnosis sessions. But most don’t.

The best hypnotists tell you about your addiction and how it works, how it is trying to trick you and how you are better than that and how you can become your old self again: a non-smoker. The purpose of the hypnosis is only to reinforce this fact. You understand your addiction and the hypnosis just helps you to “remember” this.

I can highly recommend hypnosis if it is something that you want to try. You don’t need it but it can help - I would suggest taking a printout of this guide or sending the pdf to your hypnotherapist if you feel it could help you.
