It’s A Habit

A lot of people call smoking “a habit”. I know a lot of smart ass, egotistical smokers who love to sum up the whole complexity of the global smoking addiction as - “it’s a habit”. In fact, I know a lot of people who have never smoked a cigarette in their life to announce it as “just a habit”.

Do you think that it is just a habit? Let’s take a look at what a habit is and then see if smoking falls into this group.

A habit is “an automatic routine of behaviour repeated regularly without intent”. When you know you have a habit, then you can normally do something about it.

An example is picking your nose or biting your teeth. People who do either usually do it automatically without giving much, if any, thought to it. When you see someone do these habits, they are usually focussed on something else. Have you ever seen someone look intently at their fingers and watch as they guide them to their nose? In fact, they only really become aware of it when they hit a huge booger and decide to take a look at it!

So do you think that smoking is a habit? Finding your lighter in your jacket, opening a pack of cigarettes and lighting up is hardly done without your intent. It’s not like you suddenly discover yourself smoking is it? You make a decision (or so your addiction fools you into thinking) to smoke.

Addictions are not habits. Do you know anyone addicted to nose picking? Do you know anyone who picks his or her nose until it is bleeding and the pain stops them doing it anymore? No, I don’t know anyone like this either!

Smoking is not a habit, it’s an addiction. To call it a habit is to simplify it and ignore what it really is. I suggest that you ignore the advice of anyone who tells you that it’s a habit, they know nothing about the real secret to stopping smoking by understanding your addiction.
